Researchers in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the broader university are genuinely excited by the potential of machine learning. However, many lack the knowledge and experience to fully leverage the power of this technology. We will have budgeted $200,000 per year to support a team of graduate-level research assistants and postdocs to serve as ‘’The ML Squad,’’ loaned to support collaborative projects. This program will lead to new interdisciplinary collaborations and opportunities for funding. We will solicit projects and recruit students starting Fall 2018. We anticipate being able to support a dozen collaborations each year.

These funds will help train additional graduate students in AI. Half of the incoming 2018 class of Computer Science graduate students identified AI as their primary area of research interest. By advising an ML squad member, Institute faculty can expand their research groups in these areas ahead of current secured funding.
