About Us
Stony Brook University's AI Innovation Institute (AI3) organizes, coordinates, and accelerates AI innovation and education across the entire campus. It serves the campus, local community, state, and the world in missions of research, teaching, technology diffusion, and societal/policy discourse.
Dedicated to driving pioneering research in the core of AI and its applications across industrial, societal, and scholarly sectors, and getting the research out into the world through comprehensive support and transformative education, the institute's mission is to empower the entire university community, the State University of New York system, New York State, and beyond in catalyzing core AI research, curriculum innovation, and appropriate societal change in the ever-evolving landscape of knowledge.
AI3 consists of three divisions:
- Research Centers and Groups (RC) — the RC focuses on clustered research by faculty groups in thematic areas. These research groups consist of faculty who have a common area of interest and demonstrated funding success, while research centers are larger, with focused efforts around a specific theme. Group and center topics covered here are diverse and span the campus; the only requirement is that they have AI/ML as a key element of their effort.
- AI Services (AIS) — AIS Services provide resources, tools, training, and consulting/support services to SBU faculty for their AI/ML needs. These services are broad-ranging, from focused help with AI/ML applications to partnering with the faculty at large, on research projects, proposals, and initiatives, either as consultants or Co-PIs. AIS has also been made available to the broader regional area beyond the university as a fee-for-service.
- Education and Equity (EE) — The focus of EE is on curriculum development and guidance, exploration of the emerging role of AI in education, providing outreach with industry and community stakeholders, engaging in policy guidance to regional and New York State legislators, and addressing social justice issues associated with AI including bias in AI, equitable access, societal consequences of the AI revolution, etc.
Reporting directly to the Office of the Provost, AI3 is uniquely positioned to accelerate, coordinate, and enhance AI innovation and education initiatives across Stony Brook, and beyond.
