Director, AI Innovation Institute

Stony Brook is excited to launch the search for the inaugural director of our new, University-wide AI Innovation Institute, or AI3, who will also be the inaugural Simons Infinity Professor.

Our institute’s priority is innovative research in foundational and applied areas that are authentic to Stony Brook. AI Education & Equity and AI Services will be additional areas of investment and development as the venture grows.

To launch the Institute, Stony Brook is dedicating $10M over five years to assemble the support staff, develop infrastructure, and underwrite initial programming. This investment is on top of the Director’s salary and startup funding.

Please contact our search consultants at Opus Partners if you have suggestions or nominations: craig.smith@opuspartners.net and Jeffrey.stafford@opuspartners.net.

Graduate AI Consultant

The AI Innovation Institute is now recruiting between two to four graduate student AI consultants to start in January 2025. Your job will be to help faculty from outside Computer Science get started with using generative AI methods in their disciplinary research. Each consultant will be assigned to a faculty/projects and work with them to realize their vision through at least a functional prototype. This is an exciting opportunity to get involved with a mix of different research projects, and bring them up to speed using modern generative AI models.

Consultants must be available to work either 10 or 20 hours a week during the school year, in exchange for a half or full graduate assistantship, and commit to serving as a consultant for two semesters. MS students in Computer Science are preferred, although PhD students will be considered with written approval from their advisors.

If you are interested, please apply here. In addition to your resume, you will need to submit a complete course transcript including all of your Fall 2024 course grades, so wait for these grades to come in before applying.
