Stony Brook Gifted $56M To Boost STEM Diversity

Stony Brook University has received a transformative $56.6 million gift from the Simons Foundation to launch the Stony Brook Simons STEM Scholars Program, aimed at enhancing diversity in STEM fields. This initiative will provide full financial support—including scholarships, housing, stipends, and research opportunities—to 50 underrepresented students annually, beginning in Fall 2023. The program is modeled after the University of Maryland, Baltimore County's Meyerhoff Scholars Program and will offer a collaborative living environment, mentorship, and a Summer Bridge Program to foster academic success and community building .
