Creating a More Resilient Energy Grid Through Artificial Intelligence

Stony Brook University is developing "AI-Grid," an artificial intelligence-enabled autonomous grid aimed at enhancing the resilience of power infrastructure against cyberattacks, faults, and disasters. Led by Professor Peng Zhang, the project is supported by a $5 million cooperative agreement from the National Science Foundation's Convergence Accelerator Program. The initiative involves a multidisciplinary team and over 30 partnerships with utilities, government agencies, and research institutions. AI-Grid integrates deep learning, encrypted control, and active fault management to create a lightweight, secure, and replicable solution for modernizing electrical grids.

The initiative emphasizes a convergence approach, integrating diverse disciplines and human-centered design to address pressing societal challenges. Over the next two years, the selected teams will engage in innovation and entrepreneurial training, focusing on product development, intellectual property, financial planning, and outreach to transition their concepts into sustainable solutions.

 

NSF Awards Nearly $3 Million for Graduate Research Training in Data Science and AI

Stony Brook University has received a nearly $3 million National Science Foundation Research Traineeship (NRT) award to support a five-year interdisciplinary graduate training program in data science and artificial intelligence. The initiative aims to cross-train PhD students from eight departments across the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Human-centered science students will gain computational skills and earn a graduate certificate in AI, while data science students will delve into social science methodologies and ethics, earning a certificate in human-centered sciences. The program, led by principal investigator Susan Brennan, seeks to address biases in data and AI systems by fostering collaboration between disciplines.
