The landscape of higher education is rapidly evolving with the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Through the Institute on AI, Pedagogy, and the Curriculum with AAC&U, we are exploring ways that we can better address AI in teaching and learning. We want to hear your experiences, your concerns, and your ideas.

This is an open discussion for all faculty and staff to share their perspectives on the opportunities and challenges AI presents in our academic environment.

We'll be exploring critical questions like:

  • In the age of AI, what are the opportunities you see for enriching the classroom and curriculum? How can it enhance student learning or your professional practice?

  • What are the most significant challenges and concerns that AI raises for you regarding academics, student integrity, or your workload?

  • What resources (tools, training, technical support, policy guidance, etc.) do you need to feel confident and successful in the age of AI?

Mind Brain Lecture: Constructing the World of Taste in Your Head You fork the morsel into your mouth and say yum...chocolate cake. The appreciation of your dessert's taste seems to follow directly, quickly and simply from the placement of the food on your tongue. The truth, however, is far more interesting and complex: your brain actually begins determining whether you will enjoy a bite of food even before the fork approaches your mouth and continues to work the problem well after. Information about your food's color, smell, texture and taste activates multiple parts of your brain, where that information collides with your pre-mouthful beliefs about how it should taste. The coming-together and shuffling of that information around the brain takes time, as networks of neurons work together to help you decide whether the morsel in your mouth is worth swallowing. Referring to work from psychology, biology and computational neuroscience, Professor Katz will de-mystify and reveal the beauty of these complexities of the neuroscience of taste. Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming scientific discovery, enabling breakthroughs in areas ranging from drug discovery to modeling complex physical systems. In the life sciences, AI has traditionally been applied to prediction tasks such as classifying molecules as toxic or non-toxic, estimating drug properties, or solving partial differential equations. These discriminative models have proven powerful, but they are inherently limited to mapping existing inputs to deterministic outputs. A new wave of methods is shifting the paradigm from discrimination to generation: creating new possibilities, such as generating novel molecules or designing new drugs. By reframing AI as both a predictive and generative engine, this shift offers new pathways for accelerating discovery and innovation in life sciences at an unprecedented scale. This talk will cover several aspects of AI for Science (AI4Sci), beginning with advances in discriminative models for molecular systems and solving PDEs, and then turning to generative approaches, including diffusion models for 3D molecular generation and large language models for drug editing. Together, these developments illustrate how moving from prediction to creation is redefining what AI can contribute to science.

Bio: Wenhan Gao is a fourth-year Ph.D. student in Applied Mathematics under the supervision of Professor Yi Liu. He was also a Staff Research Scientist Intern at VISA Research, where he worked on large language models (LLMs) and multi-agent systems for commerce. Wenhan's research focuses on AI for Science (AI4Sci), with a particular emphasis on generative AI. His work looks deep into the fundamental mechanisms of AI models when applied to scientific tasks, and he strives to incorporate established scientific priors, such as symmetry, into model design. He has published papers as a first or corresponding author in leading AI and computational venues, including ICLR, ICML, NeurIPS, TMLR, ACL, and the Journal of Computational Physics. In addition to his research, Wenhan has served as a reviewer and oral session chair for top AI conferences and as a lecturer for both undergraduate and graduate courses at Stony Brook University.

Virtual Talk: Contextual Modeling for Natural Language Understanding, Generation and Grounding by Rui Zhang

Abstract: Natural language is a fundamental form of information and communication. In both human-human and human-computer communication, people reason about the context of text and world state to understand language and produce language response. In this talk, I present 
several deep-neural-network-based systems that first understand the meaning of language grounded in various contexts where the language is used, and then generate effective language responses in different forms for information access and human-computer communication. First, 
I will introduce Speaker Interaction RNNs for addressee and response selection in multi-party conversations based on explicit representations for different discourse participants. Then, I will 
present a text summarization approach for generating email subject lines by optimizing quality scores in a reinforcement learning framework. Finally, I will show an editing-based multi-turn SQL query generation system towards intelligent natural language interfaces to databases. 

Bio: Rui Zhang is a final-year PhD student at Yale University advised by Professor Dragomir Radev. His research interest lies in various natural language processing problems in understanding, generation, and grounding. He has been working on (1) End-to-End Neural Modeling for Entities, Sentences, Documents and Multi-party Multi-turn Dialogues, (2) Text Summarization for Emails, News and Scientific Articles, (3) Cross-lingual Information Retrieval for Low-Resource Languages, (4) Context-Dependent Text-to-SQL Semantic Parsing in Human-Computer Interaction. Rui Zhang has published papers and served as Program Committee members at top-tier NLP and AI conferences including ACL, NAACL, EMNLP, AAAI and CoNLL. During his PhD, he has done research internships at IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, Grammarly Research and Google AI. He was a graduate student at the University of Michigan and got his Bachelor's degrees at both the University of Michigan and Shanghai Jiao Tong University from the UM-SJTU Joint Institute.

You are cordially invited to attend the biweekly Brookhaven AI Mixer (BAM). BAM includes one short talk on AI research happening at BNL, followed by an open mixer over coffee and snacks for everyone to network and discuss all things AI. The first half hour will consist of presentations that will be available via ZOOM, and the second half hour will be for in person only networking.

Join us every other Tuesday at noon in CDSD's Training Room (building 725, 2nd floor) to learn about interesting AI methods and applications, engage with potential collaborators, prepare for pending FASST funding calls, and build a community of AI for Science at BNL.

Abstract: The increasing complexity and volume of data from electron microscopy necessitates advanced computational tools for timely and accurate analysis. In this talk, I will present several machine learning (ML) models developed to interpret diverse datasets from transmission electron microscopy (TEM). First, I demonstrate segmentation models for labelling regions of interest from in situ TEM images, such as atomic column positions or reaction sites that allow atomic-level quantitative analysis of data. Second, I introduce a self-supervised CNN model for denoising of low-dose HRTEM images, enabling clearer visualization of atomic features without sacrificing temporal resolution. Finally, a transformer-based model trained to predict copper oxidation states directly from their electron energy loss spectroscopy spectra will be introduced. Together, these projects showcase the power of tailored ML solutions to extract quantitative insights from complex microscopy data.

Biography: Brian Lee is a research associate working for the Electron Microscopy group and Theory and Computation group at the Center for Functional Nanomaterials. Previously, he has received PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Duke University and worked as a postdoc at Purdue University. His research focuses on applying machine learning and simulation techniques for materials science.
